Ibutamoren, also known as MK 677,is a drug which acts as a potent, orally active growth hormone secretagogue, mimicking the GH stimulating action of the endogenous hormone ghrelin.
Ibutamoren is a strong and long-acting selective ghrelin receptor agonist . Ghrelin receptors – GHSRs (Growth hormone secretagogue receptors) naturally trigger the production of endogenous growth hormone . Ibutamoren stimulates the production of growth hormone essentially by mimicking the function and activity of another endogenous hormone – ghrelin: The action and binding of Ibutamorene MK-677 to Ghrelin receptors first results in the release GHRH (Growth-hormone-releasing hormone) from neurons in the Nucleus arcuatus (infundibular nucleus of the Hypothalamus), which is then transmitted by the hypothalamic-pituitary portal system to the anterior Pituitary, where by acting on GHRHR (Growth hormone-releasing hormone receptor (GHRH receptors)) stimulates the resulting growth hormone secretion pituitary gland.
Studies have shown that this drug is highly potential in increasing bone turnover. When given to elderly subjects, It growth hormone secretagogue was seen to be efficiently improving the condition of bone turnover in them, based on elevations of biochemical markers of bone formation and resorption in them. All this was observed when this peptide was given to them orally.
