·Food sources of vitamin B12 include poultry, meat, fish, and dairy products. Food manufacturers sometimes add vitamin B12 to breakfast cereals. ·Some people may take oral supplements to boost their intake. For individuals with very low vitamin B12 levels, healthcare providers may prescribe injections or nasal sprays.
·Severely low vitamin B12 levels—known as vitamin B12 deficiency—are uncommon in the United States. Low levels can sometimes occur in people who follow vegetarian or vegan diets, as plant-based foods do not contain vitamin B12.
·Older adults and individuals who have undergone gastric surgery are also at risk, as their ability to absorb this vitamin may be impaired. People with digestive disorders such as celiac disease or Crohn's disease are also at risk of low vitamin B-12 levels.
·Individuals with severely low vitamin B-12 levels may experience symptoms such as fatigue, muscle weakness, stomach upset, nerve damage, vision problems, and mood changes. Additionally, they may develop iron deficiency (anemia) or have low blood cell counts.
·The recommended daily intake of vitamin B-12 for adults is 2.4 micrograms (mcg). Older adults may require a higher intake, as the body's ability to absorb the vitamin declines with age; they may need 10 to 12 micrograms to meet their physiological needs.
