Palmitoyl dipeptide-7 is one of the shortest peptides. When tested using human skin equivalents, it was found to enhance the differentiation of epidermal, basement membrane zone and dermal fibroblasts. In dermal fibroblasts, palmitoyl dipeptide-7 promotes the synthesis of type I collagen, type IV collagen and fibronectin. The local application of the peptide is limited by the ionic nature of the amino acid chain. However, this can be achieved by incorporating lipophilic derivatives, such as palmitoyl, with lipid-soluble characteristics.
A skin care composition which includes a combination of palmitoyl dipeptide-7, acetyl tetrapeptide-11, other optional skin components and a dermatologically acceptable carrier. The combination of peptides synergistically improves cellular ATP levels and/or upregulates the expression of peroxisome activated receptor alpha and/or methylsterol monooxygenase 1 to help improve skin health and appearance.
